The Corps of Military Police has become the first in the Indian Army to recruit women in its rank and file. The training of the first batch of 99 Women Military Police commenced on January 6, 2020, as per a report by Times of India. From basic military training to advanced provost training, the women will be trained for 61 weeks at the Corps of Military Police Centre and School, Bengaluru.
An official of the Defence Ministry stated that a total of 1700 women military police will be inducted over 17 years. The first-ever batch of non-medical women cadets in the Indian Army came up in 1992. At present, women in the Army work only in engineering, medical, legal, signals, and educational wings. But with the initiative of The CMP, the Indian Army is taking a step forward towards an inclusive defense force.

The Defence Ministry stated that due diligence has been attributed while developing administrative infrastructure for women recruits’ accommodation based on interactions with the Officers Training Academy in Chennai, Assam Rifles and National Cadet Corps and the Officers Training Academy in Gwalior where presently training of women soldiers is being imparted.
The Duties of CPM
Identifiable by their red berets, white lanyards, and belts, black brassards with MP printed in red, the CPM performs a variety of duties. From specific duties like handling Prisoners of War (POW), controlling stragglers and refugees during the war, assisting other regiments, provision of close protection to the Chief of Army Staff to general policing, investigation and maintenance of law and order, the police force is responsible for a wide range of tasks.
The women soldiers will be following the same terms and conditions as their male counterparts. After training, the female military police force will perform duties akin to what the male military personnel performs.
